Yesterday my brother graduated from the same college I graduated from 12 years ago.
Being back on campus with my family celebrating him was a joyful, full circle moment. ⭕️
I also realized that I did not listen to my own commencement speech as actively as I was listening to his - I was too busy getting to the next stage, getting a job, making it, proving it, pushing it, forcing it...
That I learned 3x since college than I did in college is just pure math, and as I was listening to president Cristle Collins Judd, my fellow alumni Leigh Heyman and the speaker Vivek Murthy, chatting about my career with Katherine Corsillo, M.S. and getting a warm welcome from Cheryl Cipro, I realized how much Sarah Lawrence College has given me in this past 16 years and how truly grateful I am.
I think a lot about the future of education and the value a traditional 4-year college degree holds in the age of remote work, offshore work, AI, technology, automation and beyond.
Here is what I have learned from the speeches and where Sarah Lawrence College has made the most tangible impacts on me:
1. Educating world citizens
2. Solving complex problems, seeing multiple sides and not seeing the world in black and white
3. Thinking critically and articulating it in writing
4. Embracing the unknown
5. Being curious, inspired and creative
6. Seeing the health of relationships as the most important factor to overall health
7. Being present and listening
8. Maintaining friendships outside of work and family
I can't wait to see where Samu Gabor is in 12 years and sharing the beautiful alumni community with him. Beyond grateful for our parents who always valued relationships and education more than anything else. ❤️
