"Gen Z looks for mentorship at work" is a trend I LOVE & I want to weigh in.

"You inspired to call my former boss now and tell her I look at her as a mentor!" Chanell Harris texted me after our interview on how she has found mentors in her career."

Don't tell them you think of them as a mentor." David Nebinski joked in our podcast, but the truth behind was simple:

Mentorship is a 2-way street.

Programs rarely work, because no-one wants to over-commit to a stranger.

Professional relationships are just like any other human relationship: you both

- learn from each other- inspire each other

- watch each other grow in your careers

- trust grows over time.

Intergenerational mentorship is SO important.

We need more mentorship across the board.

Don't worry about the label.

Focus on opportunities to work directly with people you admire.

Chanell's story, like most people's I look up to, has a main theme:

✨ Don't look for mentors.

✨ Don't look for praise.

✨ Look for growth.

✨ Look for leaders who inspire you.

✨ Look for feedback.

✨ The more uncomfortable the feedback ➡️ the greater the growth ➡️ the deeper the relationship.

*also, if a few years in you do tell someone you look at them as a mentor, chances are it will make them smile. ☺️
